The Senior Minister of Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington, DC, the Rev. Dr. Wallace Charles Smith, announced his plans to retire at the end of calendar year 2024, after 33 years of faithful service. Shiloh stands at a pivotal moment in our journey of faith, seeking a Pastor/Senior Minister with the biblical and spiritual qualities outlined in I Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9, and I Peter 5:1. We open our doors and hearts to a minister who embodies a spirit of servant leadership and who will nourish our community with an inspired, biblically-rooted approach to Christian education. Our next leader should be a visionary who will embrace our heritage while propelling us forward with innovative ideas and a deep commitment to fostering discipleship and outreach. Over Shiloh’s 161-year history serving the DC metropolitan area, only six senior ministers have shepherded our congregation.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PASTOR/SENIOR MINISTER

The Pastor/Senior Minister for Shiloh Baptist Church is called to:

  1. Provide visionary leadership to guide the direction and growth of our church and community.
  2. Deliver biblically grounded, imaginative, and stimulating sermons. 
  3. Extend compassionate pastoral care to the membership in times of joy, sorrow, and crisis.
  4. Exhibit a firm commitment to institutional accountability and transparency. 
  5. Lead, coach, and mentor ministerial staff and diaconate. 
  6. Cultivate discipleship training for ministry leaders and the broader congregation.
  7. Oversee the management and administration of church ministries, staff, and operations, including budgeting, scheduling, and communication.
  8. Foster a culture of community engagement, emphasizing investments in youth and family programming.
  9. Build collaborative relationships with local, national, and international religious and civic organizations.

REQUIRED SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Master of Divinity from an accredited theological seminary or divinity school.
  2. A Doctor of Ministry (DMin), Doctor of Theology (ThD), or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from an accredited theological seminary or university is preferred.
  3. Licensed and ordained as a Baptist minister.
  4. Seven or more years of experience as a successful senior or associate minister at a Baptist church.
  5. Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  6. Superior financial planning and management skills.
  7. Competency with office productivity software, including MS Office / 365, Google Workspace, video conferencing, and email management or similar tools. 
  8. Affiliation with local or national religious and/or social justice association(s).
